The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich became a national sensation when it launched back in 2019. Popeyes describes the Classic Chicken Sandwich as “a juicy chicken breast fillet marinated in Popeyes seasonings, hand battered and breaded in our buttermilk system, fried until golden brown. Sandwiched between two buttery toasted brioche buns, topped with our barrel cured pickle slices and classic mayo.”

For anyone that has had Popeyes chicken before, you get what you expect in terms of the chicken breast fillet. If you have not had Popeyes before, the chicken does an excellent job of being crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The chicken breast fillet is thicker and crunchier than what is offered on a Chick-fil-A sandwich. The breading is also flavorful as the chicken breast fillet could stand on its own as a meal without the rest of the sandwich.

One would expect Popeyes to produce a quality chicken breast fillet, but what would really make or break the sandwich is the bun and toppings. The brioche bun is an excellent choice for this sandwich. It provides the additional support the thicker chicken breast fillet needs, while providing a bit of buttery flavor. The pickle slices are thicker than what you typically find at fast food restaurants but aren’t overpowering in flavor. The mayo provides a nice contrast to the Popeyes seasoning in the breading.

The Classic Chicken Sandwich runs $4.99 at my local Popeyes, or $9.49 for the Classic Chicken Sandwich Combo which comes with one regular side and a small drink.

It is not hard to see why the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich became such a sensation. It puts an already enjoyable piece of Popeyes chicken on a tasty brioche bun and makes the meal portable.
