As we discussed on the most recent episode of the podcast, for a limited time Sonic is offering a Peanut Butter Bacon Cheeseburger. I was very intrigued by this unusual pairing. So I made a trip to my local Sonic to see how this burger would taste.
Sonic offer both a single and double version of the burger. At my local Sonic the single is $6.99 while the double is $7.99. For only a dollar more, the double seemed like the obvious choice.
The first few bites of the burger were quite enjoyable. However, the peanut butter and onions were concentrated towards the center of the burger. I think those first few bites were really just the basic bacon cheeseburger with an indistinguishable amount of peanut butter.

As I made my way towards the center of the burger, the peanut butter taste strengthened, along with the onion taste. The burger also comes standard with grilled onion. Normally, I enjoy grilled onions on my burger. However, these grilled onions were much thicker than typical grilled onions, resulting in a strong onion flavor. As I crossed the midpoint of the burger the peanut butter and onion flavors were both strong, and I did not find them particularly enjoyable together.
The Sonic Peanut Butter Bacon Cheeseburger was a case of diminishing returns. The first few bites were very good, but as the onion and peanut butter flavors strengthened, I found the burger to be less enjoyable with each bite.
Overall, I think the burger is worth trying as a one off. It’s not that bad, but I would have preferred a regular bacon cheeseburger without the peanut butter and onions.
5/10 – An interesting idea, but not something I’ll miss when it’s gone.
I also tried the Peanut Butter Bacon Shake.
