For a limited time only, the Double Decker Taco is back at Taco Bell. The Double Decker Taco is the standard hard-shell taco, wrapped in a soft tortilla with a bean paste filling between the shells. Price will vary by location, but per the Taco Bell press release are as low as $2.99. I stopped by my local Taco Bell the other day to try one for myself.

Upon unwrapping my Double Decker Taco, the first thing I noticed was that the bean paste did not seem to bind the soft shell to the hard shell in the same way the cheese does in a Cheesy Gordita Crunch. The loose binding did not affect my ability to eat the Double Decker Taco but it does show off the bean paste, which is not the most appetizing to look at.
You get what you expect with the Double Decker Taco. The flavor is basically just a taco with some additional bean flavor. I thought the bean filling was decent, but not spectacular. The most appealing aspect of the Double Decker Taco is the ability to get both hard and soft shell in the same bite. While appealing, I still prefer the classic Cheesy Gordita Crunch, which runs $1.70 more at my local Taco Bell. Personally, I think it is worth it to upgrade from bean paste to cheese and a better soft shell. Or just get both a soft and hard shell taco and alternate bites.
5/10 – not bad but nothing special
